Eminent professors visit Wangat Lodge with ecology students

Emeritus Professor Dr Peter Myerscough (front left) first brought Sydney University ecology students to Wangat Lodge in the 1980s and continued to do so until his retirement more than a decade ago. Peter is an eminent botanist and still writing scientific papers, and accepted the invitation of current University staff to make a return to Wangat for the 2014 ecology field trip.
Emeritus Professor Dr Chris Dickman (squatting, front right) similarly shared his expertise – he is a zoologist and the author of a weighty tome on Australian marsupials – on more than a dozen Sydney Uni field trips at Wangat. He too came back for the July program.
Peter is in his early eighties and Chris not long retired, but the knowledge of the Australian bush that they carry and share is enormous, and their sense of responsibility to encourage a deep appreciation of Australia’s natural heritage a driving force for them both. Wangat Lodge has been a seat of learning for around a thousand Sydney University students over the years, and their week of field work here – in mid-winter and all weathers – is always one of great dedication, a few mishaps and adventures, great camaraderie and a whole lot of new knowledge.
